Celebrating Our Nurses
This week is National Nurses Week, and from May 6th through the 12th, nurses across the country are being honored for their countless contributions to patients every day. Morgan Stanley Children's Hospital joins in this celebration and salutes our nurses for providing not only the highest quality of care, but also the most compassionate and supportive. A series of events will be held throughout the week during which the Hospital will pay special tribute to its outstanding nursing staff.

Pollin Pediatric Research Prize Awarded for Discovery of Lifesaving Treatment
Dr. John A. Clements is the recipient of the 2008 Pollin Prize in recognition of his seminal contributions to our understanding of how lungs hold air, and to the development of a lifesaving treatment for respiratory distress syndrome (RDS) in infants. The Pollin Prize, created in memory of Linda and Kenneth Pollin, and administered by NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital, was awarded to Dr. Clements, left in photo with Jim Pollin and Dr. Herb Pardes, President and CEO of NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital, on April 4 at a ceremony at Morgan Stanley Children's Hospital.

Innovations in Pediatric Medicine Conference
On November 8 and 9, 2008, Morgan Stanley Children's Hospital and Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons will host Innovations in Pediatric Medicine, a national continuing medical education (CME) conference for pediatricians, pediatric surgeons, pediatric sub-specialists, and pediatric nurses. The conference, which will coincide with the Hospital's fifth anniversary, will review advances in genetics, stem cell therapy, infectious disease, cancer, and common childhood diseases.

Morgan Stanley Children's Hospital Gains International Recognition for Life-Saving ECMO Treatment
Morgan Stanley Children's Hospital has received the "Excellence in Life Support Award" from the Extracorporeal Life Support Organization, an international consortium of centers offering ECMO (extracorporeal membrane oxygenation) for support of failing organ systems in infants, children and adults. Since 1982, the Center for Extracorporeal Life Support at Morgan Stanley Children's Hospital has been directed by Dr. Charles Stolar, Chief of Pediatric Surgery (photo). The Center was the third in the world to successfully support a neonate. Thousands of infants have been referred as potential ECMO patients from 47 institutions throughout the tri-state area and the mid-Atlantic region.

$50 Million Gift to Expand and Enhance Emergency Care at Morgan Stanley Children's Hospital
A $50 million gift from Alexandra and Steven Cohen will significantly expand and enhance emergency pediatric care at Morgan Stanley Children's Hospital. To be built in a brand-new facility, the Alexandra and Steven Cohen Pediatric Emergency Department will offer world-class emergency care to all children, including those from some of the poorest and most underserved areas of New York City. The gift is being made through the Steven A. and Alexandra M. Cohen Foundation, Inc.

The ranking accounts for NewYork-Presbyterian's two major centers for children's health care: Morgan Stanley Children's Hospital of NewYork-Presbyterian and the Komansky Center for Children's Health at NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital/Weill Cornell Medical Center.
