R. Peter Altman, MD
Dr. Altman received his undergraduate education at Colgate University, and attended the University of Rochester School of Medicine and New York Medical College. After completing his internship at the Mount Sinai Hospital in New York, he received his training in General Surgery at the Tufts-New England Medical Center in Boston. He served as Research Fellow for the March of Dimes and Postdoctoral Fellow for the National Institutes of Health. Dr. Altman was trained in Pediatric Surgery and Thoracic Surgery at the Children's Hospital National Medical Center in Washington, D.C. He remained on the staff at the Children's Hospital in Washington until he returned to New York in 1980, to assume his present position as Professor of Surgery of the College of Physicians & Surgeons of Columbia University and as the Surgeon-in-Chief of the Babies & Children's Hospital of New York.
Throughout his career, Dr. Altman has been committed to improving and advancing the surgical care of infants and children. He has written extensively for journals and textbooks, and has been a Visiting Professor of Pediatric Surgery world-wide. His scientific interests have centered on hepatobiliary diseases, pediatric surgical oncology, and surgical education.
Dr. Altman is the President-Elect of the American Pediatric Surgical Association and serves on the Board of Governors. He is a member of the Grant Review Committee of the National Institutes of Health, and is a consultant to the American Board of Surgery. He is a member of the Graduate Education Committee of the American College of Surgeons and has served on the Residency Review Committee for Surgery. He serves on the editorial boards of numerous surgical and pediatric surgical journals.
