Pediatric Surgery

Lawrence Bodenstein, MD, PhD

Dr. Bodenstein has earned a bachelor's and a master's degree from The Johns Hopkins University, a medical degree from Harvard Medical School and a doctoral degree from Harvard University. He has completed a residency in general surgery and a fellowship in surgical critical care at Beth Israel Hospital (Boston) and a fellowship in pediatric surgery at Babies' Hospital (currently, the Morgan Stanley Children's Hospital of New York-Presbyterian). Dr. Bodenstein is board certified in general surgery and pediatric surgery. He is a fellow of the American College of Surgeons, the American Pediatric Surgical Association, the American Academy of Pediatrics and the Children's Oncology Group. He serves as vice-chairman on the Institutional Review Board (IRB) of Columbia University.

Dr. Bodenstein conducts research in the field of computational embryology. His focus is on using computer simulation modeling to understand growth and development of the embryo and fetus (morphogenesis and cell patterning).

Dr. Bodenstein maintains an active practice in the New York area and was on the faculty of New York University Medical Center for eight years prior to joining the faculty at the Morgan Stanley Children's Hospital of New York-Presbyterian in 2002. His practice is confined to infants, children and adolescents and includes endocrine surgery, surgery of the esophagus, gastric, intestinal and colorectal surgery, surgery of the liver, gall bladder, spleen and pancreas, hernia surgery, testicular surgery, newborn surgery and surgery of congenital abnormalities, surgery of the chest and lungs, and surgery for cancer and other tumors. Minimally-invasive techniques are used where applicable. Prenatal consultations for conditions diagnosed during pregnancy are welcome.
