Admission and Discharge
Admission Process
Your child's doctor will tell you on what day your child will be admitted to the hospital. Please discuss with your child's doctor any special steps that must be taken before admission.
A nurse will call you the night before to give you the time you and your child should arrive at the hospital. On the day of surgery, you and your child will go directly to the 4th floor of the hospital for the admitting process.
Otherwise, a member of the Admitting staff will call you on the morning (in some cases, the call will be later) to let you know exactly what time you and your child should arrive - unless your child's doctor already gave you that information.
If you will not be able to arrive at your scheduled time for admission, please notify the Admitting staff immediately.
A member of the Admitting staff will go over your insurance before or at the time of admissions. On or before admission, you will be asked to pay in full for estimated charges not covered by your insurance. The Hospital accepts cash and major credit cards for payment.
Admitting Office: (212) 305-3388; if you are inside the Hospital, call 5-3023.
Discharge Day
When your child's physician tells you that your child is ready to go home, the nurses will discuss ongoing care with you. If any prescriptions are required, they will be given to you or another adult member of your family the night before discharge. You have the right to receive a written discharge plan that describes the arrangements for any future healthcare that your child may need after discharge. Your child may not be discharged until the services required in your written discharge plan are secured or determined by the hospital to be reasonably available. You also have the right to appeal this discharge plan.
Discharge time is 10:00 a.m. A family member should be available to take your child home. If your child is an infant or toddler, please remember to bring a safety seat. Please stop at the Admission/Discharge Desk on the day of your child's discharge.
