Blood and Marrow Transplantation

Mitchell S. Cairo, MD
Chief, Division of Blood and Marrow Transplantation

With a keen understanding of the physical concerns and emotional impact of blood and marrow transplantation (BMT), we have assembled a team of highly skilled and experienced specialists who are committed to helping children and their families through diagnosis, treatment, and recovery. Our compassionate staff work closely together to respond to the medical and psychological needs of patients and their loved ones.

As an international leader in blood and marrow transplantation medicine, our comprehensive team includes pediatric hematologists, surgeons, pathologists, radiologists, transplant coordinators, nurse practitioners and research nurses, as well as child life specialists and social workers. Our program also draws upon the wealth of medical and technical resources available at NewYork-Presbyterian/Columbia.

With one of the largest BMT programs in the nation, Morgan Stanley Children's Hospital offers autologous and allogeneic stem cell transplantations to treat children and adolescents with certain cancers and non-cancerous conditions, and is renowned for its pioneering work and expertise in umbilical cord blood transplantation.

Our patients receive outpatient treatment in the Herbert Irving Child and Adolescent Center, which offers a state-of-the-art setting carefully designed to minimize the stress of undergoing cancer treatment.
