Emergency Medicine

Our Expertise

For many patients and their families, the Division of Emergency Medicine is the gateway to Morgan Stanley Children's Hospital. With access to the vast resources of the entire Hospital, we provide the highest quality emergency and trauma care in the region. We offer a full range of primary and high level tertiary and quaternary) subspecialty care, 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Our Emergency Department features sophisticated medical technology and monitoring systems to ensure rapid assessment and implementation of treatment, as well as ready access to a full range of subspecialty services, including pediatric cardiologists, oncologists, gastroenterologists, and infectious disease specialists.

The Emergency Department also features:

Pain Management Program

Each member of our Emergency Department health care team is committed to the adequate and timely management of pain our young patients. From the moment a child arrives, we carefully assess and monitor pain levels and provide the intervention that is necessary to alleviate the pain. Throughout the visit, staff continually record pain levels and provide appropriate therapies to ensure that our patients are as comfortable as possible.

Children's Comprehensive Psychiatric Evaluation Program

Morgan Stanley Children's Hospital's Emergency Department offers one of the only dedicated psychiatric programs in the country designed specifically for the evaluation and treatment for children and adolescents with psychiatric emergencies. In October 2004, in coordination with Child Psychiatry and the Pediatric Emergency Department, the first New York State Comprehensive Psychiatric Emergency Program for children and adolescents with psychiatric disorders was established. At our facility, children having psychiatric emergencies are evaluated in a separate emergency department that is staffed around the clock by a psychiatric staff, including a child psychiatrist, nurses, case managers, and psychologists. Patients receive rapid comprehensive psychiatric evaluations and, when indicated, can be held up to 72 hours in extended observation beds for stabilization. The Children's Comprehensive Psychiatric Emergency Program has decreased the number of children admitted to inpatient psychiatric units from 40 percent to under 10 percent.

Fast Track Program

The Division of Pediatric Emergency Medicine has developed a Fast Track Program that provides a separate facility for patients with less urgent needs so they can be cared for more efficiently and in a timely manner. The Fast Track Program operates from 11 am to midnight.

Disaster Preparedness

The Division of Pediatric Emergency Medicine has developed comprehensive plans to address bioterrorism and disasters of any kind. We work closely with all departments within Morgan Stanley Children's Hospital, and in conjunction with the Adult Emergency Departments of NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital, to conduct regular disaster drills and provide emergency preparedness training for staff. Our Division has received recognition from the New York City Department of Health for our work in disaster preparedness.

Community Outreach

The Division of Emergency Medicine is committed to the health and well being of our community. This is demonstrated through our many outreach programs and partnerships, such as our annual Steven Z. Miller, MD, Health Fair at Morgan Stanley Children's Hospital, which this year provided education on health and safety issues to more than 700 children from area schools. The next Steven Z. Miller, MD, Health Fair is scheduled for May 15, 2008.

Our Emergency Medicine staff also frequently visit schools, where we teach health care and preventative medicine to hundreds of children and teachers every year. We encourage young people to be active participants in maintaining their own good health. In addition, we provide a formal school-based emergency readiness educational program and managing medical emergencies in the classroom for teachers and school administrators.
