Research
The faculty of the Columbia Comprehensive Epilepsy Center conducts ongoing research in a number of areas. These include:
- treatment of depression in epilepsy -- National Institutes of Health (NIH) grant
- genetics of depression in epilepsy - NIH grant
- how patients with memory problems or certain information processing problems, which are not uncommon in epilepsy associated with prior brain injury, participate in the decision making process - NIH grant
- hormonal and bone health and fracture risk in patients with epilepsy - several NIH grants
- investigation of proteins in the brain that pull out antiepileptic medications using a Verapamil-labeled PET scanning - funded by the American Epileptic Society
- epidemiology and potential genetic associations with epilepsy
- medication trials in pediatric epilepsy
- analysis of blood flow variability within the epileptic zone in collaboration with the Department of Psychiatry
