School-Based Mental Health Program
Collaborating with the Department of Education, the School-Based Mental Health Program brings comprehensive evaluation and treatment services into 15 schools in Washington Heights, Inwood and Harlem. The goal of the program is to increase access to care while maintaining children in mainstream educational settings whenever possible.
Multidisciplinary clinicians and case managers work collaboratively with school personnel and parents to identify children in need of mental health services. Services include psychiatric evaluation, crisis intervention, pharmacologic management, psychotherapy (individual, group and family therapy), parent education and guidance, classroom intervention, and case consultation to school staff. Case management and referral to local community-based services are also provided, as needed.
Other community-based programs include:
Integrated Mental Health/Primary Care ProgramThis program provides child psychiatric psychological services at primary care sites that are part of NewYork-Presbyterian's Ambulatory Care Network:
- Audubon Practice
- Broadway Practice
- Herman "Denny" Farrell, Jr. Community Health Center
- Charles B. Rangel Community Health Center
- Washington Heights Family Health Center
Services include mental health evaluation, short-term treatment and co-management of mental health issues with primary care providers. In addition, the program provides short-term crisis intervention and psychotherapy to children and families seen at the Child Advocacy Center. Services are available to pediatric and adult patients of these practices.
Columbia University Parent Partner ProgramThe Columbia University Parent Partner Program provides support for and referrals to psychosocial and educational resources to the parents of children who are cared for in the Hospital's Pediatric Psychiatry Clinic. Our staff helps parents to understand their child's diagnosis and treatment plan. They also guide parents in navigating the many Hospital services and programs available to them and their children. Parent support groups also focus on issues identified by them as being vital to the mental health of their children and family.
