Carrie Ruzal-Shapiro, MD
Chief, Division of Pediatric Radiology

The Division of Pediatric Radiology at Morgan Stanley Children's Hospital has a long and proud tradition of developing and refining diagnostic imaging services for children. Dr. John Caffey, regarded throughout the world as the "father of pediatric radiology," developed the first department of pediatric radiology here in 1929. Dr. Walter E. Berdon, Director Emeritus of Pediatric Radiology at Morgan Stanley Children's Hospital, described many of the well known pediatric conditions, including necrotizing enterocolitis and prune belly syndrome.

Our highly trained pediatric radiologists perform more than 40,000 exams each year, providing a full range of inpatient and outpatient imaging services, including magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), computed tomography (CT), fluoroscopy, ultrasonography, nuclear medicine, routine radiography, angiography, and interventional procedures.

The Division's new 64-slice CT scanner represents the latest in imaging technology, offering unparalleled resolution and quick scan times. In addition to pediatric radiologists, our staff also includes a dedicated pediatric neuroradiologist. Our pediatric anesthesiologists supervise imaging procedures that require sedation.

Our staff takes great care to minimize the anxieties connected to the diagnostic process, while making sure that the procedures performed and technology used are designed and calibrated for young patients to minimize radiation exposure. For our nuclear medicine procedures, we employ limited amounts of radiopharmaceuticals to visualize blood flow and metabolic activity.

Morgan Stanley Children's Hospital's radiology and imaging facilities are equipped with the most technologically advanced equipment, specially designed or adapted for children. We provide image interpretations in a timely manner to facilitate an accurate and efficient diagnosis.

Our pediatric radiologists understand the unique needs of children, parents, and pediatricians and work collaboratively as part of the diagnostic team to provide the best possible care for our patients.
